President Dr Mohamed Muizzu sent a message of felicitations on the occasion of this year’s Commonwealth Day.

The President’s message reads as follows:

This year’s Commonwealth Day greets us at an opportune moment to summon the spirit of unity to ensure a prosperous and resilient future. Today, we celebrate our rich diversity, our common values and norms espoused in the Commonwealth Charter.

The Commonwealth is an important partner for Small Island Developing States such as the Maldives. It has been a strong advocate for climate action, increased and simplified access to finance, gender equality, increased trade and building resilience, all of which are significantly important. This is why this year’s theme, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth” resonates with our interests.

As we also commemorate the Commonwealth’s 75th anniversary this year, we are reminded of how far we have come together. Our unified efforts have helped place people at the heart of sustainable development. It has helped us address and overcome our vulnerabilities. It has pushed us to deliver on our shared commitments. We are truly at an advantage when we work together in unison.

We are also grateful for the Commonwealth’s commitment to find solutions to shared challenges in the lead up to, during and beyond the Commonwealth Heads of the Government Meeting in Samoa later this year. The Maldives reaffirms its commitment to working within the Commonwealth family to explore new ways to address common challenges, as we pave the road for a common future and common wealth.”

The Maldives rejoined the Commonwealth on February 1, 2020.
