New Ambassador of Kuwait designated to the Maldives, H. E. Khalaf M. M. Bu Dhhair, has assured President Yameen of the Kuwait Government’s continuous support and cooperation to the Maldives in all areas. The Kuwaiti Ambassador made this remark at a meeting held this morning at the President’s Office, following the presentation of his credentials to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

The Kuwaiti Ambassador also assured of his commitment to strengthening the diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Kuwait, during his tenure.

At the meeting, President Yameen congratulated the new Kuwaiti Ambassador on the commencement of his term, and welcomed him to the Maldives. He noted that the Maldives and Kuwait has shared longstanding brotherly relations, and expressed his hopes to maintain the strong diplomatic bonds.

The President underscored Kuwait’s role in the Maldives’ development, especially noting that the Kuwait Fund had pioneered the development of the Maldives’ first international airport. Speaking in this regard President Yameen briefed the Kuwaiti Ambassador on the airport development project currently underway, stating that it would bring about a transformational shift in the tourism sector of the Maldives.

Highlighting the Government’s development plans, the President noted that tourism was the main economic activity of the Maldives. In this regard, the President informed the Kuwaiti Ambassador on the foreign investment opportunities in the Maldives, and the growth of the Maldives’ trade sector. The President and the Kuwaiti Ambassador exchanged ideas on areas where the two countries could further cooperation.

The President also briefed the Kuwaiti Ambassador on the concerns raised by the island communities; mainly the need for clean drinking water and proper sewerage systems. The President and the Kuwaiti Ambassador discussed on ways the Government of Kuwait could assist in these areas.

At the meeting, President Yameen and the Kuwaiti Ambassador spoke on global issues of mutual concern. They also exchanged ideas on how the Islamic community could work together in tackling these problems.

The President was accompanied at the meeting by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dunya Maumoon and Under Secretary at the President’s Office, Mr. Mohamed Naseer.
