Noting that the media is the fourth branch of power, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that all branches of the State must take on their duties responsibly when executing their power. The President made this remark while addressing the people of Gemanafushi Island, following the inauguration of the island’s harbour. The President is currently on a tour of some islands of North Huvadhu Atoll.

The President highlighted the duties and authorities bestowed on the three branches of the State; the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary, and noted that none of them had absolute power. He underscored that each branch must practice their authorities within the constitutional limits, in a check-and-balance mechanism.

Speaking at the function today, the President stated that responsible journalism was factual reporting, and verifying a story before publication. He warned that publishing a defamatory article will be held against that news agency, and be punishable.

In his speech, the President sadly noted that some Maldivians, teamed up with certain influential countries were trying to pass sanctions on the Maldives. Underlining that it would be the people who would suffer as a consequence, the President reiterated the continuous efforts of the Government in ensuring the safety and security of the Maldivian people.

In his speech, President Yameen called for the support and cooperation of the people in the Government’s endeavours undertaken for the betterment of the community. He also highlighted the numerous efforts being taken by the Government for the development of the country in all areas.
