President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has on Tuesday evening said that the Government aims at shaping a society that respects and depends on its youth, and one that the youth feel that they belong to. The President made this remark while speaking at a function held to celebrate the success of the Government’s sports manifesto, “Sports Manifesto Guaranteed”.

Speaking at the function held this evening, the President noted that the youth would become more responsible towards what they can do for the nation, and start doing their part for the well-being of the country, if they are more confident of their self-worth. The President also encouraged all the youth to go as far as possible in attaining their goals, and assured that this Government will provide all the necessary guidance and resources for their development.

In his speech, President Yameen noted that the youth were not a population only involved in sports, and urged the Maldivian youth to be enthusiastically active in building the society, and bringing an impactful change to the country. The President appealed to the youth to stay away from criminal activities, and to be self-developing.

Speaking at the function, the President pointed out that athletes acted as society’s role models all over the world, and that in the Maldives too there were several ways that Maldivian athletes could contribute to the society. In this regard, the President said that this Government needs the youth to lay a good foundation for the future, and help build a better generation.

In his speech, the President stated that the Government has revised the criteria for the National Youth Award, in order to encourage more youth participation in the society, apart from sports. In this regard, the President said that the highest priority will be given to the youth who contribute the most to the prevention of drugs and narcotics, those who campaign against smoking, and those who put in their efforts to reduce crime rates in the society.

The President also highlighted the many endeavors undertaken by the Government to promote youth empowerment.

At the function held this evening, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom officially opened the futsal grounds built in different regions of the country, by the Government.
