Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor has affirmed that the Government accords high priority to addressing the Maldives’ social challenges, as much as to achieving economic development for the country. The Vice President made this remark while speaking at the design unveiling ceremony for the “China-Maldives Friendship Bridge”, a monumental bridge being built with Chinese assistance, linking Male’ city and Hulhumale. The design of the bridge was officially unveiled by Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor, and Vice Minister of Commerce of China, Gao Yan.

At the ceremony held this evening, the Vice President said that a certain minority of Maldivians was of the impression that this Government’s policies were focused only on economic development. Discrediting this marginal opinion, the Vice President underscored the numerous endeavours taken on by the Government to resolve the social challenges being faced in the country. He also pointed out that economic advancement was the key to mending many of our social problems.

Highlighting that the construction of the bridge between Male’ and Hulhumale was one of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s key pledges, Vice President Adheeb said that the bridge will not only serve as a highway linking the two islands, but also be part of the solution for the problem of population congestion in Male’.

The design unveiling ceremony for the “China-Maldives Friendship Bridge” was also attended by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim.
