President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the strength of a country depended on the commitment of its people to upholding their nationality and rule of law, rather than a country’s geographical size or economic status. The President made this remark while speaking at the closing ceremony of the first round of the symposium held on training campaign leader, President Yameen 2018; an initiative of the Progressive Party of Maldives.

The President reiterated that his administration would collaborate with any foreign party, in order to attain development for the country, without compromising the country or its nationality. He stated that it was unacceptable that some countries always criticized the Government and its policies, and that it was unlikely that such a country who always defied us would respect our independence or rule of law. The President also said that the Government will maintain the friendships and bilateral relations with countries who do respect our individuality and sovereignty.

In his speech, President Yameen said that it was upon us to change our status, and that in transforming the country, the Government will collaborate with its international partners. However, the President underscored that none will be as vigilant of our own wellbeing as us, and reminded the people that a foreign party trying to influence our domestic issues will always have an ulterior motive.

Speaking at the ceremony this evening, the President said that development never happens by chance, and that it was a change brought about, with the support of all collaborative partners, by envisioning developmental targets, setting goals, and effective investment. He further stressed on the efforts taken by his team in transforming the country, and highlighted the Government’s many endeavours undertaken in ensuring economic development and social security for the Maldivian people.
