President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom ‎ has today granted ‎pardon to 169 offenders serving criminal sentences. The pardon was issued ‎under Article 29 of the Clemency Act.‎

A total of 116 criminal offenders were pardoned on parole, after ‎taking in to consideration their age, health condition and conduct. In this ‎regard, convicts who are serving drug related sentences are required to ‎complete a rehabilitation programme. ‎

Also, if a pardoned offender violates the parole, their pardon will ‎be revoked. Further the Presidential pardon will not waive off the financial ‎obligation of the offenders.‎

Presidential pardons were not granted to offenders serving ‎sentences for homicide, hadd offences, terrorism, drug trafficking, sexual ‎abuse and other major sexual offences.‎
