The delegation of Commonwealth observers of the Maldives’ parliamentary election, have paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

At the meeting held at the President’s Office this morning, members of the delegation noted that the electoral process was held in a very well planned and well organised manner. The Chair of the observers’ delegation H.E. Bruce Golding praised the people of the Maldives for demonstrating peaceful conduct throughout the election process.

Highlighting some of the main concerns raised by his team, Mr. Golding noted that public positions such as the Commissioner of Elections must be held by persons who commanded broad public confidence.

At the meeting, the President noted the areas in which immediate constitutional reform was needed. He underscored that all individuals must abide by the laws, and all institutions must be held accountable for their actions.

The President reassured of the Government’s commitment to the reform measures needed to consolidate the country’s democratic system. The President also expressed his hopes that the coming Majlis would demonstrate accountability and civility in their conduct.

The meeting was attended by Minister at the President’s Office Hon. Mohamed Hussain Shareef, Minister at the President’s Office Hon. Abdulla Ameen, and Ambassador-at-Large H.E. Abdulla Hameed.
