President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the Parliament held the key to increasing Government revenue, and that the Parliament must facilitate the Government by passing the relevant revenue bills. The President made this remark while speaking to the people of Addu City this evening.

Underlining the necessity of the Parliament’s approval of the revenue bills, the President pointed out that the Government would be unable to carry out any forms of public taxation without the passing of the relevant revenue bills. In this regard, the President said that the Parliament must facilitate the Government in generating its income, before holding the government accountable.

President Yameen underscored that the Government has not yet had to borrow from the bank, or from a foreign partner, in order to pay wages to Government employees. He said that all employees were being salaried by economizing the Government funds.

In his speech, the President highlighted the steps being taken by the Government to improve the public service sector. In this regard, the President noted that the civil servants played a major role in providing public service, and that they should be well-trained and made more responsible in carrying out their duties. He stressed that the public service sector needed major reform for the government to be able to accomplish its manifesto goals within five years.

Continuing on, the President spoke of the President’s Office’s initiative in monitoring and reform of the public service sector. He said that it was a vital step taken towards strengthening government institutions, and making them more accountable to the people.

In his speech, President Yameen reiterated that his administration did not discriminate against anyone based on their political affiliation, and that it treated everyone equally. The President also called on all councilors to cooperate with the government in its endeavors.

In his speech, the President also highlighted the number of projects planned for the development of Addu City, and those that were currently underway.
