The new Australian Prime Minister, Hon. Tony Abbott has sent a congratulatory letter to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The letter was presented to the President this morning by the Australian High Commissioner to the Maldives, H.E. Robyn Mudie, during a courtesy call held at the President’s Office.

At the meeting, the Australian High Commissioner congratulated President Yameen on his assumption to presidential office. Discussions were held on the strong bilateral relations between the Maldives and Australia, and on ways to expand cooperation between the two countries.

Highlighting Australia’s strong development assistance to the Maldives in the field of human resource development, President Yameen thanked the Australian government for its sincere support. He noted with appreciation the announcement last night of further scholarship opportunities for Maldivian youths in Australian institutions of higher learning.

Ambassador Mudie assured the President, of Australia’s continued assistance in strengthening the country’s democratic institutions, and noted with satisfaction, the prevalent mood of optimism and confidence of the people, in the Maldives’ aspiration of economic recovery and political stability.
