During a courtesy call by Russian Ambassador H.E. Alexander Karchava, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has expressed his gratitude for the Russian government’s continuous support to the Maldives in the international arena, and thanked the Ambassador for Russia’s recent advocacy at the UN Security Council, to respect the sovereignty and self determination during the recent elections-related difficulties in the Maldives.

At the meeting held at the President’s Office this morning, President Yameen conveyed the Maldives’ appreciation of Russia’s unrelenting support for smaller countries.

Speaking at the meeting, the President stressed that the Maldives has always managed its own issues prudently, underlining the Maldives’ efforts taken to sustain its political freedom and sovereignty.

At the meeting, the Ambassador congratulated President Yameen on his victory in the presidential elections. He also expressed the Russian government’s eagerness to work closely with President Yameen’s administration.

The Ambassador reiterated that Russia always refrains from interfering with the domestic affairs of other countries, and assured of Russia’s continued support to the Maldives.

The President and Ambassador Karchava spoke on the long existing bilateral relations between the two countries, and discussed plans to build cooperation in various aspects. President Yameen welcomed Russian investors to the Maldives.

President Yameen further spoke of the Maldives’ ambition to be a model in its advocacy for democracy and economic empowerment. He also stressed that the empowerment of women and youth were two major priorities of the government, and shared with the Ambassador, his administration’s goals of being a proactive contributor to the overall wellbeing of the South Asian region.

President Yameen was joined at the call by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dunya Maumoon, Minister at the President’s Office, Hon. Mohamed Hussain Shareef, and Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms Fathimath Inaya.
