President Dr Mohamed Waheed has reaffirmed that he would not back a particular candidate in the Presidential Elections to be held on 19 October, as all the candidates had his support. He said all Maldivians, including himself, would share the success of the winning candidate.

The President made this remark while addressing the nation this morning via local media, on the occasion of this year’s Eid-al-Adha.

President Waheed said that it was the national duty of each presidential candidate to bring happiness and joy in to the hearts of the people, and to save them from the uneasiness and conflict that has engulfed the country.

Continuing in this regard, the President said that the treasure Maldivian citizens trusted him with 5 years ago; the nation, has so far been taken the best care of.

Highlighting that there was room for doubt about the integrity and fairness of the next President elected, President Waheed said that much division has now been created in our community, and vengeance greatly widespread. The President pointed out that it has now become extremely difficult to differentiate between fact and fabrication. He further said that it was now part of everyday life to create conflict and hatred within the society, for political gain.

“However much you deny it, the truth would still be the truth. However much you try to defend it, a lie would still be a lie”, said the President.
