President Dr Mohamed Waheed has appealed to teachers and school managements to help further strengthen the country’s social fabric. In a statement issued on Teachers’ Day, the President said at a time when the country was undergoing transformation, students must be taught good conduct, including respecting their seniors.

Referring to this year’s Teachers’ Day slogan “A Call for Teachers,” the President said the slogan represented the need for skilled and informed teachers and the importance of preparing students to contribute to global challenges. He added that to achieve this goal it was crucial to increase and enhance professional development activities for teachers.

The President said as education was the most important contribution for national development, the role of teachers in national development must be celebrated. He therefore said relevant institutions should widen their efforts towards producing quality and skilled teachers capable of shaping the future of the country.

When preparing students as future citizens, the most important consideration, he said, was to ensure that students get good discipline based on Islam.
