President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said he would work to provide scholarships to aspiring teachers and to provide a respectable salary for teachers. He made this announcement while speaking at the prize giving ceremony of Sharafuddin School of Addu City.

President said people interested in the teaching profession have now reduced. As a result, he said there are more foreign teachers at higher grades. He also said a main reason for this was reduction of young people coming into the teaching profession.

President Waheed also spoke on the necessity to improve the education standards in the country. He said the greatest investment for the country would be the investments into education and added that there was a need to include moral values in the national curriculum.

In his speech, President Waheed noted the progress made by the school over the year and said one of the purposes of his participation at the school’s prize giving ceremony was to encourage the teachers, parents and students of the school. He noted that teaching was not an easy task, and praised teachers and parents for the success achieved.

During his visit to Addu City, President Waheed also attended the 40th anniversary celebration of Feydhoo School.
