Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan, Mr Yoshita Shindo has paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Waheed. The meeting was held this morning at the President’s Office.

At the meeting, President Waheed and Minister Shindo discussed the current political, economic and social situation of the country.

Underscoring the close bilateral relationship between the two countries, President Waheed expressed his gratitude for the support and developmental assistance Maldives has continued to receive from the Government of Japan. He especially highlighted the assistance received from Japan towards the development of the education, telecommunication and broadcasting sectors of the country.

Noting the importance the government accords to promoting renewable energy and sustainable development, the President and Minister discussed ways of expanding cooperation in the area.

President Waheed further assured that the government would ensure complete transparency in the presidential election to be held in 2013.

Minister Shindo assured of Japan’s continuous support and cooperation to the Maldives.

Following the meeting, President Dr Mohamed Waheed hosted a lunch in honour of Minister Shindo.
